What we assumed
  • Figures from the IRS's 2026 Schedule 1-A draft and Revenue Procedure 2025-32. The deductions apply to tax years 2025 through 2028.
  • Standard deduction, no itemizing, no qualified business income deduction and no credits. Credits come off the tax afterward and can make the real saving smaller.
  • Tips and overtime are still subject to Social Security and Medicare, and to state income tax unless your state has adopted the same deduction.
  • Assumes a valid Social Security number for everyone claiming, which each of the four deductions requires.

Guide

How the tips deduction works

From 2025 through 2028, up to $25,000 of tips a year comes off your taxable income if you work in a job where tipping was customary before 2025. It lowers federal income tax only. Tips are still wages for Social Security and Medicare, and most states still tax them.

Which tips qualify

Tips a customer chose to give, in cash or on a card, in an occupation on the Treasury's published list: restaurant and bar staff, hairstylists and barbers, hotel and casino workers, delivery and rideshare drivers, and dozens more. The tips have to be reported, on your W-2, a Form 1099 or Form 4137 for tips you report yourself.

Automatic gratuities and service charges a business adds to the bill are not tips, because the customer did not choose them. They are wages and do not qualify. Self-employed people in fields such as health, law, consulting or performing arts are excluded.

The limit

The cap is $25,000 per return, the same for a single filer and a married couple. Above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint), it drops $100 for every full $1,000 over, so a single filer at $400,000 has none left.

Married people must file jointly, and whoever received the tips needs a valid Social Security number.

What it saves

A server earning $38,000 in wages and $14,000 in tips has $52,000 of income. The deduction takes the $14,000 out of taxable income; at the 12% rate most of it would have paid, that is about $1,680 less federal income tax. Social Security and Medicare on the tips, about $1,071, are unchanged.

Questions about this calculator

Are tips tax-free now?

Not entirely. Up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year is deductible from federal taxable income. Social Security and Medicare still apply to every dollar, and state income tax usually does too.

Do I have to itemize to deduct tips?

No. The tips deduction is taken on Schedule 1-A whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

Does a 20% service charge on a large party count?

No. A charge the business adds automatically is a service charge, not a tip, and is taxed as wages.

I am a gig delivery driver paid through an app. Does it apply?

Delivery and rideshare drivers are on the list, and tips reported on your Form 1099 count, up to your net profit from the work. The cap and income limit are the same.

Is the $25,000 per person or per couple?

Per return. A married couple filing jointly shares one $25,000 cap even if both earn tips.

Terms used here

Qualified tips
Voluntary cash or charged tips received in an occupation on the Treasury list of jobs that customarily received tips before 2025.
Service charge
An amount a business adds to the bill without the customer choosing it. It is wages, not a tip.
Form 4137
The form used to report tips you did not report to your employer, and to pay Social Security and Medicare on them.
MAGI
Modified adjusted gross income. For most people it is the AGI on Form 1040, line 11b.

Practical tips

Report every tip to your employer. Unreported tips can still qualify through Form 4137, but only once reported.

Keep a daily tip log; the IRS can ask for it.

Update your W-4 if you want the saving in each paycheck instead of the refund.

Limits and caveats

Federal income tax only. Social Security, Medicare and most state income taxes still apply.

The deduction covers 2025 through 2028. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

How this is calculated

What the calculation includes, what it leaves out, and how it rounds.

  • Which tips count. Cash and card tips a customer chose to leave, in a job on the Treasury’s list of occupations that customarily received tips before 2025: servers, bartenders, hairstylists, delivery drivers and dozens more. Automatic service charges added to a bill are wages, not tips. Tips have to be reported to your employer or on a Form 1099 to count, and self-employed people in fields like law, health or consulting are left out.
  • The cap and the income limit. Up to $25,000 a year per return, whether single or married filing jointly. Above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint), it loses $100 for every full $1,000 over (Schedule 1-A lines 10 to 15). Married people have to file jointly.
  • The tax saved. Federal income tax is worked out twice for the same year, with and without the deduction, using the 2026 brackets and standard deduction. The difference is the saving, before any credits.
