  • This estimate uses tax year 2026.
  • Federal filing status: Single.
  • Federal income tax uses the IRS standard deduction of $16,100.00. Itemized deductions are not used.

How Illinois taxes a paycheck

Illinois taxes wages at one flat rate, 4.95% of taxable income, whatever the salary.

The personal exemption for a single filer is $2,925.

Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

What the Illinois figure includes

  • Illinois individual income tax is 4.95% of net income (IDOR; rate effective July 1, 2017).
  • Tax year 2026 personal exemption is $2,925 per taxpayer (IDOR FY 2026-15). Joint returns use two taxpayer exemptions. Each dependent is another $2,925 (35 ILCS 5/204(c); Schedule IL-E/EITC dependent exemption allowance).
  • The exemption allowance is not allowed if adjusted gross income exceeds $500,000 on a joint return or $250,000 on any other return (FY 2026-15). That high-income cliff is not modeled, which understates tax for those filers.
  • Illinois additions, subtractions, and credits are not modeled. The starting point is gross wages minus the personal exemption.

Illinois paycheck questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Illinois?

On the Illinois median wage of $51,960 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $402.20 of a $1,998.46 paycheck goes to tax: $155.97 federal income tax, $152.88 Social Security and Medicare, and $93.36 Illinois income tax. That leaves $1,596.26.

This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.

Does Illinois have a state income tax?

Yes. Illinois taxes wages at one flat rate, 4.95% of taxable income, whatever the salary. The rules come from Illinois Department of Revenue.

What is the Illinois income tax rate for 2026?

Flat 4.95% of taxable income.

How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in Illinois?

About $798.71 a week, or $41,533 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; Illinois income tax about $46.72.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
