Pennsylvania Tax Forgiveness is a share of Pennsylvania tax, and this estimate treats wages as eligibility income and every dependent as a dependent child on Schedule SP. A filer with extra nontaxable eligibility income, or whose dependents are not qualifying children, is shown less tax than they owe.

How Pennsylvania taxes a paycheck

Pennsylvania taxes wages at one flat rate, 3.07% of taxable income, whatever the salary.

Local tax not included: Pennsylvania local earned income tax. Commonly 1% to 3.735%, depending on where you live or work. Act 32 EIT is commonly 1%–2.75% of wages. Philadelphia's wage tax is 3.735% for residents and 3.425% for non-residents as of 1 July 2026 (City of Philadelphia Department of Revenue). Pittsburgh, Reading and Scranton also sit above the Act 32 band. Your real take-home is lower than the state figure.

Federal income tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets and standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

What the Pennsylvania figure includes

  • Pennsylvania personal income tax is 3.07% (Tax Reform Code of 1971, Section 302, as amended by Act 46 of 2003).
  • No standard deduction is applied.
  • Tax Forgiveness (PA-40 Schedule SP) is modeled: 100% of the tax is forgiven at eligibility income of $6,500 unmarried or $13,000 married, plus $9,500 per dependent child, then 10% less for each $250 over that ceiling (2025 PA-40 SP Eligibility Income Tables 1 and 2; amounts unchanged since tax year 2004). This estimate treats wages as eligibility income. Nontaxable Schedule SP income is omitted, so a filer who has any is shown less tax than they owe. Dependents are counted as dependent children; a filer whose dependents are not qualifying children is also shown less tax than they owe. Married filing separately uses the married table on this income only, not joint eligibility income.
  • Local earned income tax is levied separately by municipality and school district. The omitted-tax band is Act 32's 1% floor through Philadelphia's published 3.735% resident wage tax, so the page does not describe Philadelphia as a 2.75% town.

Pennsylvania paycheck questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Pennsylvania?

On the Pennsylvania median wage of $49,690 (BLS, May 2025), paid every two weeks, about $350.36 of a $1,911.15 paycheck goes to tax: $145.49 federal income tax, $146.20 Social Security and Medicare, and $58.67 Pennsylvania income tax. That leaves $1,560.79.

This assumes a single filer with the standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health premiums, which would lower both the tax and the check.

Does Pennsylvania have a state income tax?

Yes. Pennsylvania taxes wages at one flat rate, 3.07% of taxable income, whatever the salary. The rules come from Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

What is the Pennsylvania income tax rate for 2026?

Flat 3.07% of taxable income.

Are there local income taxes in Pennsylvania?

Yes: Pennsylvania local earned income tax, commonly 1% to 3.735%. It depends on where you live or work, so this estimate leaves it out.

How much is $1,000 a week after taxes in Pennsylvania?

About $814.73 a week, or $42,366 a year, for a single filer with the standard deduction in 2026. Federal income tax takes about $78.08 a week and Social Security and Medicare $76.50; Pennsylvania income tax about $30.70.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Employers withhold with the IRS percentage method and your W-4, not with an annual estimate split into pay periods. Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or an HSA lower your taxable pay, and bonuses are often withheld at a flat supplemental rate. Over a full year the two should come close; a single check can differ.
